Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
